This is my own studied view. Others’ views may be different as emnunciated in this declaration : एकं सत. विप्र बहुधा वदन्ती. Truth is one. The wise describe it variously.
परमात्मा शब्द यह दो शब्द ‘परम’ और `आत्मा’ की सन्धि से बना है। परम का अर्थ सर्वोच्च एवं आत्मा से अभिप्राय है चेतना, जिसे प्राण शक्ति भी कहा जाता है।
The word Paramatma is morpheme of two words 'Param' and 'atma'. Param means supreme and everlasting, and ‘atma' means ‘self’.
Atma is roughly translated as soul. Its meaning as soul is distinct from that assigned in other belief systems.
The personalized form of the universal self is Parmatma. Its equivalent is God. The personalized form of its ‘Ansha', that is a miniscule of the universal self, is atman which in the sense of personalized form, is the soul. Atman is not only in the body as a whole it is in each and every of the three trillion cells in the body.
So in the manner in which paramatma is found everywhere in the universe, because it is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient, the Atman too is omnipresent omnipotent and omniscient in the body as a whole and in each and every cell of the body. There is no distinction between the space within a closed vessel and the space outside the vessel. In both places it is the same space. Similarly there is no distinction between atma and paramatma - the part self and the whole self.
This realisation dawns when the sheath of ignorance is cast away much as it occurs when a snake casts away its skin.
