Understanding our Real Self Intelectually

What we call self is viewed in many ways.

The way defines the understanding of what we call self. And besides each way has many schools. Each school presents it differently. Many a time the explanations conflict with each other.

Therefore the assetion: एकम संत. विप्र बहुधा वदन्ति.

Ekam Sat. Vipra Bahudha Vadanti. Truth is one. Different persons describe it variously.

This truth is there is what is called 'the real self'. There is no mine, yours, their’s, our.

We are born from a fertilised ovum. The ovum itself is the cell of our mom's body. Every cell is anna-maya food stuff. So we are food stuff. Every thing in this universe is combination of five elements.

These elements are: Prithvi/Bhudevi (Hindi: पृथ्वी:, Earth), Apas/Varuna/Jal (Hindi: अप:, Water), Agni (Hindi: अग्नि, Fire), Vayu (Hindi: वायु:, Air), Akasha/Dyaus/Ether (Hindi: आकाश, Space ). Wikipedia.

Backward dissolution takes us intellectually to energy and still backward to space, and still backward to nothingness. That nothingness is full. That is the real self', true self, the self, the it, the Brahman.

How is IQ Measured

IQ means Intelligence Quotient. Intelligence is our capacity to know, learn and understand any particular thing like words, calculations, shapes, problems, capacity for rational, logical and analytical thinking and memory. Quotient means a ratio shown as how high or low it is in comparison to 100. 100 means normal. More than 100 more than normal and less than 100 less than normal.

Now let us see how it is calculated.

Let us assume this for the sake of understanding:

A child of 6 years can add single digit numbers and a 8 year old can add double digit numbers. Now my child who is six years can add double digits. So the math IQ is determined to be

(Mental Age ÷ Chronological Age) x 100

Here (8/6)*100 = 133.33

The formula was: IQ = Mental age ÷ Physical age × 100.

No matter what the child's chronological age, if the mental age is the same as the chronological age, then the IQ would equal 100. Modern intelligence tests, such as the current Stanford-Binet test, no longer compute the IQ using that formula. Source : Wikipedia

Some one liners of worth

Self help is the best help.

One thing at a time, and that done well, is a very good thing, that many can tell.

Man purposes, God disposes.

Nothing is achieved by hoping alone.

Can figures both in can and cannot, what word we choose decides or fate.

A step in the right direction takes us closer to our destination.

Aim far, but look down, lest you trip and fall.

Knowledge backed by humility brings respect.

Extend a helping hand to anyone who is in need so long it costs you nothing.

Gift of Dharma is most valued.

Knowledge when shared grows.

The aged lion sits by the pool side and survives eating frogs, for no one has the right to live for free.

Yes but, if then, why because are statements made by doubting and unsure people.

Dealing with fear

Fear is a feeling. It increases when we do not get rid of it. It grows into anxiety and thence into despair. It is easy to get rid of fear, anxiety and distress. Here's how.

Have an action plan for what ever we fear were to come true. Here areeare some examples:

1. Event: I am late. What if I miss the train.

Action plan: I will catch an intercity bus and do the job I have decided to complete today.

Result : Fear was gone.

2. Event: I was born late to my parents. I had this lurking fear about the possible death of my father around the time I was turning twenty.

Action plan :  I decided this. I will stop my education and start working to look after my mother and younger brother. This despite the fact that I had an elder brother.

Result : My fear was gone.

3. Event : My doctor told me that I had a cancerous prostrate and I needed to do a biopsy to determine whether surgery was necessary. The 10-12 days time to receive the biopsy report is usually worry-some. I did this being a Positivity practitioner.

Action plan: I  said this to myself. I would request for surgery anyways.

Result: That settled the matter and my worry disappeared.

Habits - Formation and Practicing them

Habit defined in a dictionary

A behaviour pattern regularly followed till it becomes involuntary.

A disposition toward self, others, things and the world at large.

An addiction which a person cannot avoid or give up..

-----

Habits are initially formed because we are taught, or we copy, or we learn, or we are trained to do things in a given way. Habit formation takes place because we are programmed by making same repeated choices. These result in neural networks building up in the brain. These networks when activated get us to think, feel, act, behave, do, respond, speak in given ways. These are called habits.

We therefore

  1. Brush our teeth
  2. Button up shirt and pant
  3. Get down steps
  4. Eat our food
  5. Drink water
  6. Soap our body
  7. Etc
By habit in a particular way. Habits  are difficult to give up because our awareness about their pattern is almost absent. We justify and protect them.

Where does Emancipation lie?

Good visualisation .
Delusion is occurrence.
Clarity is tool.
Realisation is the objective.
It's goal and becoming.
Seek it.
Become it.

How to be Enlightened

To become enlightened?

Find answers to these questions.

  1. What is 'I'?
  2. Who am I?
  3. What is me?
  4. Which I is indestructable?
  5. What is realisation?
  6. How does I dissolve?
  7. How to facilitate merger of I into I. In finding it is already there.

Skill Defined

Skill is an essential quality that converts activity into an end product.

What for do I love my father / cherished memories

  1. Riding on the bike seated behind him - to the chor bazar in Mumbai every so often, to Pune and watching lighting of buildings in Mumbai during Republic day celebrations.
  2. His untiring support to encourage my many workshop activities.
  3. Providing avenues to learn, study and be well educated.
  4. Introducing me to persons of senior management levels in the corporate.
  5. Helping and nurturing me to build a strong, robust, well formed impressive personality.
  6. Helping me be the man I an today - achiever on very many fronts, successful and accomplished.
  7. Being able to face life as it comes.
  8. Standing firm for my beliefs and values.
  9. Identifying my strengths and weaknesses and promoting strengths and giving clues how to get over weaknesses.
  10. Being able to communicate ideas clearly.

Silencing our Mind

We can silence our mind at will by asking these two questions and then saying no.

Question 1. What is this mind thinking? Explore for 10 to 15 seconds without  finding an answer.

Question 2. Do I need to think? Explore for 10 to 15 seconds without finding an answer.

Say no. Then remain thought free for 10 to 15 seconds.

----
Do this many times a day for 1 to 3 months. It not only jacks up our mental awareness, it also helps us to silence our mind if it is uncontrollably thinking or is locked  in an emotional hype.
---
How to talk to our mind to ask it to give up any particular thinking or engagement or emotional hype. See blog post at Permitting our Mind

Powers of our mind you can use

These are some of the things I have learnt through exploration and practice.

  1. We can actualise thoughts by thinking in given ways.
  2. We can stop our mind's occupation by talking to it.
  3. We can train our mind to be happy and joyful.
  4. We can increase our mental awareness by a simple exercise.
  5. We can use our mind to control urges, drives, impulses, wants and needs.

I think our interest in partners, people, topics, things and generally is on account of changes in our hormonal, biological, sexual, orientational, psychological, emotional, sociological, cognitive, monetary and developmental needs and related interests.

It changes with

  1. Change in our mind set over time.

Different types of Anger

A friend asked me at what point is anger born / what triggers anger. I penned a reply which I am reproducing here.

Anger is not born.
Either

1. person is an angry person - Reflects person's general disposition.

or

2. person becomes angry
- this is expression of desperation or method of protest or person is programmed to use this method to resolve situation or problem

Or

3. person gets angry - this is the person's natural switch to tackle difficult situations or silence another

or

4. person remains angry - person holds on to the anger to continue in bad state

or

5. person expresses anger - to end situation or solve problem. This is rare. Because person immediately returns to normal state on expressing it. The person uses a component of personality to do this.

Starts in Mind. Ends in Action

Manage Mind All Will Be Fine
Need generates want.
Want generates desire.
Desire generates urge.
Urge generates impulse.
Impulse generates a drive.
*Result* We get victimised and fall a prey unknowingly.

How do we Live our Lives

This is copy of an answer I gave on Quora to title question.

I think we live our life stressfully, responsively, accommodatingly, giving or making concessions, giving up on our own wants, needs and preferences. We are successful when we succeed in doing all these things time and again willingly, happily and joyfully with least expectations of others.

How practice helps in learning

Our brain is gifted with neurogenesis, neuroplasticity and neuro synthesis. The more we use or apply a certain part of our body or capacity the brain neurons keep connecting in new ways, generating new connections called synapses. Thus they form new networks. These networks connect with other networks in new ways. This is neuroplasticity. Then further these bundles of networks connect with other bundles of networks in new ways. This is called neuro synthesis. This process can be stimulated by doing the activities over time in a particular given way.

Does Optimism Work

This was a question on Quora that I answered today. I am repeating my answer here.

Quote:

"Question : Does Optimism work in real life?

Answer: I am a realist and an optimist. My answer is yes. As yet I attempt to answer your tricky question.

What is optimism?

Optimism is a mental attitude reflecting a belief or hope that the outcome of some specific endeavor, or outcomes in general, will be positive, favorable, and desirable. Ref Wikipedia-Optimism

Beyond destiny and fate - we live in a world that we create for ourselves. Therefore optimists choose to keep sides with the possibility of a favourable result than giving place to doubt or failure. That is all.

Like they say : “the proof of the pudding is in eating” one should try both methods for a month each and determine to oneself whether it is true or not. Why? Because it is a matter of belief that it does. Much like wearing stones, or reciting chants, or saying prayers, or performing pilgrimage and the like.

I thank you for giving me an opportunity to do this." Unquote

The Art of Living

The art of living lies in achieving much excellence without owned action. Being nobody, doing nothing, going nowhere as yet becoming (identifying oneself) one with the universal one. Life becomes a gift, not a burden once this is  realised as fact.

Our Self - Another View

Our Self - Another View

We use the word self mainly in these contexts.
  1. I, myself.
  2. We, ourselves.
  3. You, yourself.
  4. You, yourselves.
  5. He, she, it, himself, herself, itself.
  6. They, themselves.
What does the word self mean? Self means our existence. It becomes experienced or known when we think, reflect or introspect about ourselves and / or other/s. Now what does the word selfhood mean? Selfhood means the qualities that set individuals or groups of people apart from others. This creates individual identity and asserts our existence as persons. Self therefore indicates in body, mind and soul. This self has two components one is the I, and the other, the me. The I is the one that is affected, and me is the one that experiences. Therefore, it is the I that experiences joy, sad, pain, sadness, fear, anxiety, distress and other feelings / emotions. It is the I that is well or unwell. It is the I that is motivated or unmotivated, brave and strong or fearful and weak, that can or cannot. It is the I that experiences being insulted, ignored, hurt, pained, injured, cornered, isolated, embarrassed, guilty, exploited, wronged, harassed, used, habituated, addicted and in many more things. We need to remember that I can be an individual or a group of individuals. The group can be a family, religious, community, linguistic, racial, national, employee, professional, occupational, political or work or other group. They too have an I, that experiences right and wrong. One may wonder what has this got to do with Positivity. Actually a lot. Why? Because it concerns our well being. Me experiences the effect. I experiences it in terms of  feeling, emotion, thinking or opinion. Self is affect in mind, body and soul. There is a direct correspondence between our level of well being and the condition of our body. Of course, we have been provided with a level of stress which we can tolerate. This stress has a threshold. It reflects in many ways once the threshold is crossed. Many of the bodily ailments are caused because of our eating habits. Many more are caused by the thoughts, opinions, feelings and emotions that we deliberately hold from expressing.

What is Intelligence

It is the capacity to / for

  1. Know
  2. Learn
  3. Understand
  4. Logic
  5. Interpret
  6. Planning
  7. Resolving
  8. Imagining
  9. Awareness
  10. Critical Thinking
  11. Imagination - Conceptualisation

In more than twelve areas of human endeavour.

Consciousness

Indian Philosophy says there is one consciousness - equivalent to water as an example. Water in the glacier, melting ice, river at source, mid stream, at its mouth at the sea, in the ocean, its evaporated atmospheric moisture, clouds, rain drops and again on land lakes, tanks streams and back rivers is the same body of water. But we are humans. We are prone to naming, qualifying, making own - right. Further water in the river, water tank, water jug, my body, urine pot, commode, drain pipe, sewage treatment plant, back to river is the same water.

The universal whole is one whole. Like iron can be made into so many different alloys. So also gold. Atoms are made of sub atomic particles. They connect in so many different ways and form so many different elements. Atoms connect in so many different ways forming so many different chemicals and bio chemical materials. When a seed sprouts seemingly not alive matter becomes living. So also with all living matter. The same food becomes so very many different bodies. Man eats it becomes man. Dog eats it becomes dog. Cat eats it becomes cat. Crow eats it becomes crow. Ant eats it becomes ant. Cockroach eats it becomes cockroach. Fly eats it becomes fly. Everywhere it is the same food. The food is comprised of the same biochemical matter. The biochemical matter is composed of the same elements organised in different ways. The biochemicals are comprised of the same atoms organised in different ways. the atoms are made from the same elementary particles organised in different ways. What is basic in all this are particles comprising atoms and forces that hold particles in place. Now the particles that make the atoms are not material. They are packets of energy which show up as being material. Therefore matter and energy is the same thing showing up in two ways. Now light is also energy. Space and energy can also be shown to be two forms of the same thing. Space is that which intervening between two energies, two particles, two things, two living matter, dead matters whatever. So the universal whole, is one whole. This one whole is conceived by human beings as consciousness.

So also with consciousness. There is one body of consciousness. There is no high low, or pure impure types of consciousness. But we are human beings we cannot conceive without understanding. And then the examples, terms, terminologies are held to be true and the body is forgotten. So also with consciousness. The same appears as many. What causes it, is called Maya - a illusion causing mechanism. We blame Maya and express our inability and then spend a lifetime to learn how to get rid of Maya. Get rid of something that did not exist in the first place.

So consciousness being one, we understand it variously, as awake consciousness, dreaming consciousness, deep sleep consciousness, where consciousness when in deep sleep, and the body of consciousness - this last one is called pure consciousness. The enterprise of spiritual practice is to become one with this so called pure consciousness.
